In Marty’s previous book, The Hero’s Journey Act I – The Separation, he explored the first part of the Hero’s Journey and its relevance to parents and martial arts. The book referenced Joseph Campbell’s work, particularly his explanation of the Hero’s Journey, which he termed the monomyth due to its presence in every culture and its role as the basic framework for countless sagas, legends, folk tales, holy texts, and modern entertainment such as movies and TV. The Hero’s Journey is significant because it is deeply embedded in the human psyche and provides a valuable perspective on a person’s path and experiences.
In Act I – The Separation, Marty drew comparisons with George Lucas’ Star Wars and Luke Skywalker’s journey. According to Campbell, all hero journeys start in the Ordinary World, where the hero lives before the call to adventure. I likened this to a child’s initial martial arts training and Luke Skywalker’s life on Tatooine. At this point, the individual stands on the brink of discovery and growth.
The next stage involves the call to adventure, which initiates the challenges the hero must overcome to grow and mature. In Star Wars, this parallels Luke receiving Princess Leia’s message through R2-D2. The hero often resists this call—it seems too challenging, they fear leaving home, or they are simply afraid. This is when the Teacher appears to guide them. For Luke, this is Obi-Wan Kenobi; for young martial artists, it’s their instructor or mentor. With their guidance and support, the hero steps into the unknown.
This book continues from where the first book ended—the hero now embarks on their grand journey. Both this book and the previous one can be read independently, as the lessons are relevant to everyday life. We have all faced challenges on our own journeys. Understanding how our struggles are rooted in a story retold through history helps us see the importance of heeding our Call to Adventure and embarking on our own significant journeys.
The Hero’s Journey is effective because it mirrors the natural process of transformation. It isn’t a program, course, or prescription. It is simply a way. The Hero’s Journey doesn’t have to be grand. It can be as personal as choosing a career. The essence of the Hero’s Journey is that it teaches you how to confront challenges and emerge with newfound wisdom and strength.
